Date agreed by: 22/06/2000

Breslow Thickness (depth) must be used to record the stage of melanoma, however any additional information available from Clarkes may be recorded. When submitting stage to ONS the 'T' componant of the UICC stage group can be derived from Breslow. Clarkes must only be used if no other information is available. See Appendix Po/00/02 for further details.

Superficial spreading melanoma

Superficial spreading melanoma and superficial spreading melanoma (Clarke’s level1) must be coded as in-situ. Superficial spreading (malignant) melanoma in its radial growth phase must be coded as in-situ, unless the pathologist also uses the word “invasive” or if the Breslow thickness is provided in the report. In these latter cases the tumour should be coded as malignant.
