For epidemiological purposes, a standard grouping may be necessary or useful, particularly in reporting the incidence for planning purposes. C00 to C14, together with C30 to C32 should form the core set of tumours included in an overall category of head and neck cancers. Thyroid cancers (C73) may be more usefully reported separately and that C44.2 may rarely be useful. However, registries may need to add sites to the core as defined earlier, including lymphomas, tumours of the cervical oesophagus or even C73, C44.2 (skin of external ear) or C44.3 (skin of other and unspecified parts of face), as well as overlapping tumours, ill-defined tumours and secondary sites occurring in the head and neck region.
